photovoltaic panels

Panels installed on or by a structure which harness solar power and convert it to electricity.

Photovoltaic panels are an energy-producing feature of a structure, in which photovoltaic cells are arrayed in panels installed on the facade, roof, or grounds of a structure. These cells generate electricity from solar radiation, thereby contributing to a structure's energy efficiency.

This is distinguished from solar heat-generating panels, which convert solar radiation directly into heat through mechanical processes, and do not produce electricity. Such panels can be assigned to the heating system of a structure.

Panels can be on the roof, facade, or grounds. The electricity-generating cells distinguish them from solar water-heating collectors, which supply heat directly.
