tuned mass damper

A stabilizing device designed to move in a contrary direction when a structure sways.

A tuned mass damper is an advanced engineering device installed near the top of a structure, which is designed to move and thereby to balance the structure when beset by strong wind or seismic forces.

The device moves in response to the forces affecting the structure and helps control its sway. The device is installed near the top of the structure, where its movement supplements the resistance of the framework.

The moving stabilizing device supplements the framework rather than replacing the framework's load-bearing role. A fixed structural member can resist forces without being the moving mass that identifies this feature.
