LED (light-emitting diode) lighting uses semiconductor diodes as a system for room lighting. Using semiconductors, electrons within an LED device recombine with electron holes to release photons (light). LED lighting is highly energy-efficient.
The semiconductor diode is the light source. This distinguishes LED lighting from an incandescent filament and from the mercury-vapor discharge used in fluorescent lighting.
