Vinyl flooring consists of tiles or sheets made of any sort of vinyl, a type of plastic derived from ethene. Polyvinyl chloride is a common form of vinyl with widespread application in construction. Vinyls provide a water-resistant surface.
Tiles and sheets are both included. Polyvinyl chloride is a common qualifying material, but the definition covers the stated vinyl family without requiring that every installation use that one plastic.
A sheet or tile made from linoleum has a different composition. Similar dimensions, flexibility, or surface patterns do not make linoleum and vinyl the same flooring material.
