landmark status

Official government protection of a built object for its public value, with legal force varying by locality.

Landmark status includes various forms of official governmental protection given to built objects for their public value, especially for historical or architectural significance. The legal force of landmark status varies by locality, and does not always offer strong protection.

Landmarks are not necessarily the largest or most visible buildings in an area, and are not necessarily well known. An object may receive landmark protection from more than one level of government; in this case, more than one landmark status should be assigned.

The protection comes from a governmental designation. Public familiarity and physical prominence are separate qualities, and several government levels can protect the same object.
