wind turbine

Related terms: wind wheel

A structure with rotating blades which converts wind energy into electricity.

A wind turbine is a freestanding structure with blades which rotate in the wind to produce electrical power. Although it is often called a windmill, it differs from the traditional windmill which converts wind energy directly into mechanical power for a local application. Wind turbines generally feed a large electrical grid, and the power they generate is used far away.

Wind turbines mounted on other structures do not count as independent structures.

Electrical generation distinguishes the turbine from a windmill providing direct mechanical power locally. Connection to a large grid is common, but the independent structural form depends on being freestanding rather than mounted on another structure.
