Definitions

turret

A small tower-like protrusion attached to the corner or edge of a building.

A turret is a small tower where the corner or edge of a building meets the roof. It protrudes a short distance (depending on the proportions of the building, but rarely more than 5 meters) above the edge of the roof, but does not necessarily rise higher than the roof's peak. Its form must be established below the point of its separation from the rest of the structure - usually with a bulge, overhang, or rounded corner - so that it appears partly attached to the side or corner.

Turrets are distinguished from towers by their relatively low profile and smaller proportions. A small tower centered on the ridge of a roofline is classified as a fleche.
