An area is a named territorial subdivision whose official designation does not state a more specific kind of unit.

The boundary can be administrative, statistical, or locally maintained. The word alone identifies a bounded place and does not establish its governmental powers or position in a hierarchy.

This territorial meaning differs from area as a measurement of surface. A district, neighborhood, or ward has a more specific institutional or customary identity; an area has only the character stated by the authority that defines it.
