Maltese local council
The seven-character code identifying a Maltese local council in the European list of local administrative units.
The 68 units are Malta's local councils. The national statistics office supplies the list and it is published as Malta's entry in the European classification of local administrative units.
Seven characters: MT followed by five digits. The first two digits are the island group, 01 for Malta with 54 councils and 02 for Gozo and Comino with 14. The third gives the statistical district within it, and the last two the council. Attard is MT01412 and Valletta MT01101.
Every code carries a zero straight after the MT, so the value has to be kept as text. The MT prefix is part of the code and not a country tag that can be stripped: the digits alone collide with the local unit numbers of other countries.
