asphalt sheeting
A roof covering of large continuous membrane sheets coated on one or both sides with asphalt or tar.
Asphalt sheeting is a roofing material similar to asphalt shingles, except that it is formed by large continuous sheets rather than small overlapping pieces. The material is a membrane like fiberglass or paper covered on both sides, or at least the upper side, with asphalt or tar.
The membrane carries its coating over a broad sheet, so the roof covering is laid out in sheets instead of courses of individual shingles. The reinforcing material and the coated surfaces can vary within that arrangement.
Asphalt shingles use smaller overlapping units. Synthetic membranes identify plastic or rubber coverings, while this sheet covering is identified by its asphalt or tar coating.
