Vegetable cultivation is the controlled growth of plants for culinary vegetables, including legumes such as beans. This includes root plants as well as leafy plants and other forms of vegetables, which are defined somewhat arbitrarily on a culinary basis to exclude most fruits, grains, and nuts.
The distinction is culinary rather than a rule that the plants cannot produce seeds. Legumes are expressly included alongside leafy and root vegetables.
Most crops treated as fruits, grains, or nuts belong to their corresponding cultivation uses. The part eaten and its customary food use matter more than the plant's ability to flower or set seed.
