Revival styles are reinterpretations of historical architectural styles. Although most styles of architecture draw from past styles, the period from the 19th century to the mid-20th century was characterized by a flurry of revivals of a great variety of ancient and classical styles. This category ranges from the neo-classicism of the 18th century to the postmodernism and oriental revival of current architecture.

The later design consciously reinterprets an earlier architectural vocabulary. It differs from an original building that survives from the historical period associated with that vocabulary.

A revival can use traditional forms with different construction materials or present-day functions. Its relationship to the older style concerns the design rather than a requirement to recreate the earlier building's use.
