metro township
A Utah township that has become a municipality while keeping the township name.
A metro township is a Utah municipality created from 2015 onward out of unincorporated land in Salt Lake County. Residents voted to incorporate as townships rather than as cities.
Despite the name it is a municipality with its own council. It differs from a city chiefly in that it contracts most services from the county rather than providing them itself.
It is unrelated to the civil township of the midwestern states, which is a subdivision of a county rather than a municipality.
