A fish spa is a place where customers or patients, sometimes seeking care for eczema or psoriasis, soak parts of their bodies (mainly feet and legs) in water in which "doctor fish" (Garra rufa or Cyprinion macrostomum) eat away their dead skin. The practice is offered for skin exfoliation and sometimes for relief of skin complaints; that intended use does not establish a medical benefit.
The fish act on skin exposed while the person is in the water. Feet and lower legs are common treatment areas, without limiting the practice to those parts of the body.
The presence of the fish distinguishes this service from ordinary foot soaking or manual exfoliation. Its defining activity is removal of dead skin during immersion.
