weathervane

A building's architectural summit formed by a decorative feature that rotates to indicate wind direction.

A weathervane is a decorative feature which turns according to the wind direction, and is used for ascertaining or predicting weather conditions.

Turning with the wind is part of the element's function. A fixed ornament with the outline of an arrow does not become a weathervane through its shape alone.

The weathervane is the top element when it supplies the building's highest architectural point. A roof or spire supporting it can end below that point.
