passenger elevator capacity
The maximum number of persons that one passenger elevator can transport together safely.
The capacity of a passenger elevator is the maximum number of persons it can carry safely at one time. The quantity is generally taken as posted in the elevator, or as specified by the elevator manufacturer.
When this data is applied to a building or a module, it should be understood to mean the maximum capacity of the regular passenger elevators, not the service elevator(s) or freight elevator(s). If the passenger elevators are of different size, then the capacity of the largest passenger elevator may be applied to the building or module.
A capacity is a limit rather than a count. It comes from the building code, the fire regulations or the seating installed, so it changes when a rule or a fitting changes and not when use changes.
It is normally well above the number of people actually present. Comparing it with a population figure measures how full the building is and not whether either number is wrong.
Where a place has both seats and standing room, the seated figure and the full figure are different numbers and each has its own field.
