chalk quarry

A site extracting chalk, a soft white calcite material, from an open pit or an underground mine.

A chalk quarry is a place where chalk, a soft white form of calcite (CaCO₃) is extracted from the ground. It can be an open pit or a mine burrowed into the earth.

Both open-pit extraction and underground mining are expressly included for chalk. The site is identified by the material removed rather than by an open excavation alone.

The use concerns extraction of the natural deposit. A place that only processes or stores chalk obtained elsewhere is a different kind of facility.
