wave absorption
A barrier sheltering a harbor or land area from disturbing water waves, including effects that cause wetting or erosion.
A wave absorption barrier is a breakwater, wall, berm, or other object whose purpose is to shield an area from large or disturbing waves in a body of water on the other side. This is most commonly applied to breakwaters which shelter a harbor from waves formed on a larger expanse of water, but it can also be applied to barriers which shelter land areas from wetness or erosion caused by water waves.
The barrier reduces the effect of waves arriving from the water beyond it. A breakwater sheltering a harbor is a common application.
Protection can also extend to land affected by wave wetting or erosion. The usage does not require a harbor basin or navigation function.
