elevator destination control

A programmed system that increases elevator efficiency by allowing passengers to choose their locations before boarding.

An elevator destination control system is a sophisticated internal traffic management system in which passengers select their destinations before boarding an elevator.

Its purpose is to speed travel times within a structure by routing people to their floors using a computer-optimized algorithm which takes into account the positions of all elevators, waiting passengers, and desired destinations at any moment.

The passenger selects the destination before entering the car. That timing distinguishes destination control from choosing a floor only after boarding. The feature describes management of elevator journeys, rather than the lifting mechanism of the elevator itself.
