Routing is any sort of indicator of directions or proximity aimed at persons traveling on any sort of route. This usage is often applied to road signs.

The indicator relates a traveler's position or direction to a route or destination. Road signs are common, but the route need not be a road.

Landing lights guide an aircraft along its landing approach, while a directional sign indicates a route to a place. An advertisement promoting a product has a different purpose from route guidance.
