glass

Related terms: transparent floor

Flooring made of glass, either for a smooth surface or to enable transparency.

Glass flooring refers to any type of floor with an upper surface made of glass (melted sand molded into homogeneous sheets or blocks). This can be a see-through floor, used in special areas for transparency with open space below or sometimes over an aquarium, or it can simply be glass plating directly over another flooring surface.

Glass floors are sometimes used to protect ruins from further damage while allowing visitors to see the original stonework below. In observation areas or in places perched over a high open space, they are occasionally installed to provide downward views. They are also used as a stylistic feature in exhibition areas.

The upper surface must be glass, but an open space beneath it is optional. Glass plating over an existing floor is included even when there is no downward view.
