manganese mine

A mine extracting natural manganese ore deposits, commonly containing the mineral pyrolusite.

A manganese mine is a site for the extraction of natural deposits of manganese ore from the earth. Manganese is a fairly common metal and a chemical element with atomic number 25. It is widely used in the production of steel and stainless steel. Its primary source is the mineral pyrolusite. A majority of manganese mined worldwide comes from South Africa and Gabon.

Pyrolusite is a principal ore source rather than the only permitted mineral. The manganese-bearing deposit defines the mining activity.

Steel and stainless-steel production consume manganese after recovery. A steelworks without extraction from a natural manganese deposit is a different industrial use.
