The legal form of a company is the form it takes in the eyes of the law governing it.
The legal form of a company is the general type it may legally use to identify itself according to the local, regional, national, or international law governing it. This is normally reflected in the ending abbreviation after the company's name (Inc., Corp., S.A., GmbH., LLC, etc.)
A company is a legal entity rather than a name, and the two part company often. A practice that is renamed after a partner joins is the same entity, while a firm refounded after insolvency under the old name is a different one with a new registration.
That distinction decides which record a building belongs to. Work done before a merger belongs to the company that did it, even where the successor now carries the name.
Where a country's register holds the answer, the company registration settles it, because it survives renaming and relocation.
