island territory
An island or island group administered as a distinct territory of a country.
An island territory is an island or group of islands that a country administers as a unit of its own rather than as part of a mainland division.
The arrangement usually reflects distance rather than size. A small population far offshore is given its own administration because attaching it to a mainland unit would be impractical.
The degree of self-government varies from near independence to direct rule, so the type states the geographic arrangement and not the constitutional one.
