It is usually a commercial establishment providing the pipes, mouthpieces, and shisha to customers. These typically feature a Middle Eastern ambience, reflecting the origin of the practice, with rugs and music from the Middle East.

Hookah lounges may also serve food and drinks.

Water-pipe smoking is the principal leisure activity. Food and drinks can accompany it without making the establishment simply a dining room where smoking happens to be permitted.
