arrondissement
An administrative subdivision in a French or related system, with powers and rank set by that system.
An arrondissement is an administrative subdivision in France or in another jurisdiction that uses the French term.
A departmental arrondissement groups communes under a subprefecture. A municipal arrondissement is a subdivision of a city and can have its own mayor or council; these two forms share a name but hold different positions.
A canton in France is principally an electoral division, while a commune is a local government unit. Neither is interchangeable with an arrondissement.
