speed

Measurements of motion over time, including distance traveled and rates of repeated rotation or swinging.

Speeds are measurements of object motion in time. They may refer to travel speed, which is the distance covered within a certain standard time (such as seconds, minutes, hours, days), or rates of repeated motion, which include the number of rotations or swings within a certain period.

A travel speed relates distance to elapsed time. A rate of repeated motion relates completed rotations or swings to elapsed time, without requiring the object to travel along an open route.

A duration instead states the time occupied by a defined movement or journey. Route length divided by journey duration gives an average travel speed, which can differ from the maximum reached.
