traffic enforcement

A location used directly to detect or enforce traffic-law violations, through personnel or automatic equipment.

A traffic enforcement location is a place functioning in some role in the direct and immediate enforcement of traffic laws. This may be a manned location but is often an automatic mechanism which photographs vehicles driving through stoplights, driving too fast, making illegal turns, tailgating, disobeying signs, or violating other traffic laws. Many of these devices use radar to gauge the speed of individual vehicles.

The enforcement occurs at the location itself, either through staff or a device. Cameras can identify violations such as running a signal or exceeding the speed limit.

Radar is one possible method for measuring speed. The general usage is broader than a speed trap because other traffic violations are included.
