Institutional office space is building space assigned to administrative work for medical, educational, cultural, or charitable institutions. It excludes university, government, and military offices, each of which has its own usage type.

Office space can only be labeled as institutional when it is strongly identified with the occupying institution; multi-tenant buildings with a mixed roster of commercial and institutional tenants are considered commercial office space.

The administrative function and identification with the occupying institution must both be present. A mixed commercial building can include institutional tenants without having the strong institutional identity of a dedicated office. University, government, and military offices have their own distinct organizational settings.
