Objects intended to convey symbolic value by representing something regarded as important.
Emblems are objects whose purpose is to convey symbolic value, and which represent an object or an abstraction of some value or importance. As a usage this is commonly applied to flagpoles, but can also include various representations of coats of arms, shields, and other symbols of countries, regions, cities, institutions, and other objects.
The represented subject can be a physical object or an abstraction. A flag or coat of arms can express the identity of a place or institution without depicting it literally.
A clock communicates the current time, while an emblem communicates symbolic identity or value. Merely attracting visual attention does not supply that representative purpose.
