bulk storage structure

Related terms: silo · tank · water tower · storage structure · reservoir · bunker

A fixed enclosure for bulk liquid, gas, or particulate commodities, generally without routine human access.

A bulk storage structure is a freestanding structure anchored to the ground which is built to hold either a mass of liquid, gas, or particulate solid commodity. It can be used for storage or to increase pressure within a system of pipes. In general these structures are not accessible to humans, although some limited form of entry may be possible for occasional maintenance.

The contents occupy the enclosure as a bulk mass. Its walls contain the commodity itself, rather than enclosing rooms in which people normally handle individual stored items.

A maintenance opening does not make the interior an ordinarily accessible storage room. A warehouse with working aisles and equipment inside has a different interior arrangement from the bulk enclosure described here.
