headframe
An exposed framework above a mine shaft that supports a hoisting system for moving loads into and out of the mine.
A headframe is an exposed framework positioned over a mine shaft, and built to support a heavy-duty hoisting system that lifts and lowers loads deep into the mine. It usually includes a large cable winding mechanism. These structures are most commonly built out of steel, but are sometimes made of concrete or wood.
The framework stands over the shaft and supports the equipment used for vertical mine transport. Its exposed form distinguishes it from an ordinary enclosed industrial building.
Steel is common, with concrete and wood also possible. The material does not replace the shaft-top lifting function as the defining characteristic.
