The number of escalators is the total number of individually driven moving staircases within the enclosing envelope of a structure. Parallel escalators are counted as separate units, whether they are moving in similar or opposite directions. If two escalators are separated by a landing before completing one level, they are counted separately. Shopping cart escalators are not counted in this field.

An up-and-down pair contributes two escalators. Two separately driven flights interrupted by a landing also contribute two, even if together they span only one floor level.

The total follows the installed staircase units rather than the number of levels served. Separate shopping cart transports belong to the cart-escalator count.
