A built object has national landmark protection when it is legally protected from demolition or degradation by the national government in its country or territory.
The national government is the source of the protection. An object's fame across the country is a separate characteristic from this legal designation.
The same object can also have protection from another government level. Local landmark protection concerns a municipality or other local authority instead.
