A frequently issued publication which reports general news without focus on a particular topic.
A newspaper is a news-related journal which is issued on a very frequent and regular basis, and is not limited to a particular topic of news (although it may be limited in scope, e.g. to news of a certain locality).
The publication reports general news on a frequent regular schedule. A geographic focus can limit its coverage without making it a publication devoted to one particular news topic.
A magazine is the separate periodical type. The newspaper definition combines its general-news scope with its frequent issue pattern; an occasional informational brochure does not meet that recurring-news purpose.
