Polish SIMC code
The seven-digit code identifying a Polish locality in the SIMC register, part of the national territorial register kept by GUS.
SIMC is the locality register inside TERYT, the national register of territorial division maintained by GUS, the central statistical office. It identifies places rather than units of administration.
Seven digits with the leading zeros significant: Aleksandrow Kujawski is 0985384. There is no check digit and the number carries no information about where the place is.
GUS states that the identifier is permanent. It survives a renaming, a change of status and a transfer to a different commune, and a retired number is never reused, so a SIMC code is one of the more dependable keys of its kind.
