curling bridge

Related terms: rolling bridge

A movable bridge with a flexible or segmented span which opens by curling vertically.

A curling bridge is a very rare type of openable bridge with a segmented or flexible span which curls open when the free end is lifted and the deck curls up away from the water. An example is the Rolling Bridge in London, England.

The free end rises while the deck bends or articulates into an upward curl. The movement changes the shape of the span rather than simply raising one rigid leaf.

The curling action is vertical, unlike the horizontal accordion motion of a folding bridge. A segmented deck and a flexible deck are both included.
