buddhist temple

A temple used for Buddhist prayer and worship, without a required architectural form.

A Buddhist temple is a sacred space for prayer in the Buddhist religion.

The Buddhist religious use distinguishes the temple from a Taoist temple, a mandir, or a Jain temple. Sacred images and buildings can resemble those of another tradition or share a site with them.

Monastic quarters can accompany the worship space, but accommodation for monks or nuns is not a condition of the temple itself. The object of devotion and the arrangement of the worship space vary between Buddhist traditions; one standard statue, hall plan, or scale is not required.
