tax office

A tax office is a governmental office engaged in collection of revenue through taxes. It may be a central office or a regional branch.

This does not refer to a tax preparation office, which is a privately run service that helps taxpayers to file returns, usually for a fee.

The office acts for the tax-collecting authority. Its level within that authority does not change the use: a regional revenue office and a central tax office both qualify, while assistance provided on behalf of a taxpayer has the separate tax-preparation purpose.
