The tenant of any space is the person, group of persons, organization, company, chain, or other entity which occupies it on an extended basis, often under contract with the owner. This does not apply to short-term users or occupiers, such as hotel guests, customers, or visitors.

Extended occupancy is the defining relationship. An agreement with the owner is common, but the definition does not require every tenancy to have the same contractual form.

A hotel guest, customer, or occasional visitor remains a short-term user. Repeated visits alone do not create the continuing occupation of space described by this role.
