pavilion

An open-air shelter consisting of a roof and supports with at least one open side.

A pavilion is a shelter which is open to the outdoor air on at least one side and does not contain any significant enclosed spaces. These structures are commonly used as picnic shelters, as components of gas stations, etc.

The roof provides shelter while at least one side remains open to outdoor air. There is no significant enclosed interior within the structure.

Picnic shelters and gas-station canopies are examples of the form. The pavilion meaning concerns the shelter itself rather than a particular activity beneath it.
