video camera surveillance

One or more security cameras watching or recording activity at important points in or around a structure.

Video camera surveillance systems are one or more video cameras positioned to watch or record comings, goings, and other events at key points in and around a structure. Most systems preserve a record of what is viewed by the cameras for future review, and a few systems forward the images to a security desk where they can be watched in real time. This technology deters crime and vandalism by making it easier to identify perpetrators and often catch them in the act. Surveillance cameras are often positioned in hidden locations out of reach so they cannot be damaged or evaded easily.

One camera is sufficient for the feature. The cameras can watch live activity, preserve recordings, or support both functions.

Concealed positioning is common rather than mandatory. The surveillance function does not require every camera to be hidden or continuously watched by an on-site guard.
