working pit

A sunken work area positioned beneath a vehicle to provide access to its underside for maintenance or repair.

A working pit is a sunken area designed for a vehicle to be positioned overhead while persons perform work on the underside of a car, truck, railcar, or any other vehicle. This is a common feature of vehicle repair shops, transportation nodes, depots and other parking sites, and any place where repair, diagnostic, or maintenance work is done on vehicles.

The worker occupies a lowered space while the vehicle is positioned above it. This arrangement provides access to the underside without defining the feature by a particular kind of vehicle.

A pit differs from equipment that raises the vehicle or lifts a worker on a platform. The work area is below the vehicle, rather than being a platform raised by lifting machinery.
