tag

A generic name based on a predefined standard or derivative of multiple standards.

A tag is a generic name for an object that identifies what sort of object it is. It uses a preset or user-defined terminology which is connected to an existing standard or to a derivative of multiple standards.

Each object should have an associated tag, often assigned automatically based on its primary attributes. For objects without names, it may serve as the main identifier: for example, a playground, a flagpole, or a gas tank would not normally have proper names, and would rarely be identified through a street address; therefore a tag would be used as their primary identifiers.

The tag identifies the kind of object through standardized or derived terminology. A proper name identifies a particular object, while the same generic tag can describe many objects of that kind.
