sprinkler system

An automated system which emits water or other extinguishing agents in case of fire.

A sprinkler system is a network of pipes, outlets, and sensors which automatically emits water or other extinguishing chemicals in the event of a fire. It is normally installed in the ceilings throughout a building, or in areas of a building most sensitive to the danger of fire.

The discharge of an extinguishing agent distinguishes the system from a fire alarm system, whose purpose is to warn occupants. Detection and suppression may be connected, but an alarm alone does not supply an extinguishing agent.

In systems with individually heat-operated sprinklers, each outlet opens in response to heat at that sprinkler. Deluge arrangements use open outlets supplied by a common control valve. Preaction arrangements use a separate detection system, with the conditions for admitting water depending on the type of interlock.
