charter township
A Michigan township that has adopted a charter, giving it stronger powers than an ordinary township.
A charter township is a Michigan civil township that has adopted charter status. The charter gives it broader powers and, in particular, protection against annexation by a neighboring city.
It is otherwise a township: it covers territory rather than a settlement, and it can contain villages and share ground with a city, exactly as an ordinary civil township does.
The distinction matters only in Michigan. No other state uses the status, so a township elsewhere is never of this type.
