Internal safety rooms are rooms designed and designated as refuges for building occupants in the event of a terrorist attack or other disaster. They are often located near the core of the structure.
The rooms must be intended as refuges, rather than merely being ordinary enclosed rooms. Their purpose is to provide a place for occupants during the emergency.
A position near the structural core is common but is not mandatory. The definition does not prescribe a particular room size or protection rating.
