garbage dump

A site dedicated to depositing mass quantities of waste that is not being recycled, often in successive buried layers.

A garbage dump is a place dedicated to the deposit of mass quantities of waste materials, especially household and workplace-generated trash and other waste material which is not being recycled. Garbage dumps often provide for the continuous burial of successive layers of waste material, and can be above ground or below ground.

The site receives deposited waste rather than merely passing it along a disposal route. Household and workplace garbage are common examples.

Successive burial is common, but both above-ground and below-ground arrangements are included. The definition does not require all waste to lie below the surrounding ground level.
