The Japanese format of address inscription refers to the prevailing syntax used throughout most of Japan. Different systems are used in Kyoto, as well as some cities in Hokkaido and in Ishikawa Prefecture.
The exact order in which the elements are arranged depends on whether Japanese or Roman script is used, but the elements include numeric codes for the city district, block, and house number, as well as the city district and ward spelled out.. In practice, the same address may be written any of 4 ways:

...where "1" and "Yaesu" both refer to the city district, "5" is the block number, and "1" is the house number. "Chuo-ku" is a ward, larger than the city district Yaesu.
