alternate numbering

House numbering in which odd numbers progress up one side of the street and even numbers on the other.

Alternate numbering refers to a house numbering system in which odd numbers increase linearly up one side of a street, while even numbers progress up the other side. The two sides are generally parallel, but do not need to start at proximate numbers (one side may start at 1 while the other starts at 40). Likewise, the two sides may progress symmetrically, but it often occurs that numbers on one side increase faster than on the other side.

A typical alternate numbering system looks like this:

1 3 5 7 9 11 13 15...
2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16...
